Quick! What are you taking for granted right this second? Seriously. Imagine some uber-powerful alien has just appeared before you and announced that you are about to lose everything–and I mean everything–except for whatever you can name in the next 30 seconds. Don’t bother asking for details. There’s no time for clarification–quick! What would you put on that list?
Would it even dawn on you to say air, water, food and shelter? Would you go straight to naming the important people in your life, your kids, spouse, parents, friends, pets? Could you name in 30 seconds every one you couldn’t or wouldn’t want to live without? Would you make it to naming possessions
, such as your computer, phone, car, house, wedding ring, baby pictures? And, oh, yeah, would you think to include your money or your job? How about ideological treasures, such as freedom, justice, security?
How would your life change if every morning you had to name everything you wanted to keep in your life in the first 30 seconds? Are you really aware of what has value in your life, what you would not want to be without? What people, things, and ideologies keep you alive, physically, emotionally, and spiritually? If you couldn’t get away with taking them for granted, how would your life change?
Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick….
